Surgical mitral valve reconstruction for leaking heart valves (mitral valve insufficiency)
Surgical mitral valve reconstruction is an essential procedure, especially in the case of an insufficient or leaky mitral valve. It is important that all four components of this valve work together harmoniously. These include the two leaflets, their connection to the valve ring, the chordae tendineae and the papillary muscles. Together, they ensure precise opening and absolutely tight closure of the mitral valve.
Surgical reconstruction of the mitral valve is performed in the event of a leaky (insufficient) valve. Only the optimal interaction of the four components of the mitral valve - two leaflets, suspension of the leaflets in the valve ring, chordae tendineae and papillary muscles - ensures perfect opening and tight closure of the mitral valve.

The minimally invasive procedure is also standard for mitral valve surgery at the HerzKlinik. Minimally invasive mitral valve reconstruction is performed via a small lateral incision (approx. 5 cm) above the ribs.
This creates a very gentle access to the chest and the heart without having to split the sternum.
