Surgical replacement of the aortic arch in aortic aneurysm

If the wall of the aneurysm is too thin due to age-related arteriosclerosis, congenital weakness of the connective tissue or an accidental injury, it can suddenly tear or burst and cause life-threatening bleeding.

Surgical removal of an aortic aneurysm is necessary to avoid the risk of tearing with subsequent occlusion of vascular outlets followed by organ infarction (aortic dissection) or internal bleeding. Depending on the extent of the aneurysm, the aortic arch can be partially or completely replaced using arch surgery. The aim of the operation is to replace the dilatation with a plastic prosthesis.
